Informal perspective about a program of study.

How I Got Started: Once, I saw a story on the news about the West Nile Virus. I was shocked about how people got it and what it did to them. It was an interesting topic to me because I spent much of my time outside, and when it was warm it was hard to avoid mosquitoes. I also became scared because I didn't want anyone I knew to be affected by it. During the news story it showed different people and families that were affected by the virus and I always wished I could do something to help. Now I am taking many classes in school that will continue to help me later when I study virology.

What I Want to Study: Virology teaches people how viruses live in cells as parasites and cause diseases. It also focuses on viruses' roles in diseases and their genetics. These are some complicated topics to understand, but I can take immunology, biochemistry, and cell biology to learn more about them.

What I Can Do In The Future: With a degree in virology, I can be a biologist and help solve problems like diseases caused by animals and insects. If I was more interested in research and experimenting, I could be a medical scientist and study the make up of cells, tissues, and organs and the affect that viruses have on them. I could also go on to medical school and become a physician and work one on one with people to cure them from disease.
