Program Profile: Geography | Home | |||
| Informal perspective about a program of study. |
How I Got Started: I love maps! After I graduated from high school I found a job at a map store. We sold all kinds of maps; from antique maps that showed what the world looked like before the collapse of the Soviet Union to detailed maps of countries like the Philippines. Each map tells the story of the world or an area. The story includes what a place looks like and the kind of people that live there and what they believe. You can usually tell a lot about a place’s politics and social structure from a map.
What I Want to Study: Geography is a discipline that studies information from maps. Classes in geography are often very diverse. I can take courses in climate change, oceanography, and even glaciology, the study of the movement of glaciers. I will also learn statistics, the history of geographical thought, and cultural and economic geography. I will need at least a bachelor’s degree in order to receive the best training in this area.
What I Can Do In The Future: A geographer is a sought after occupation! As a geographer I can work for private companies, the government, and even universities. I can work with researchers and provide them with information for local, regional and even global areas. I can also work with urban planners and give them advice about where to place shopping malls, roads or parks. Sometimes people with degrees in geography become photogrammetrists and actually create maps! The coolest thing about my future will be the opportunity to use maps to study and understand the nature of the world.
